Winterize Your Skin In 8 Easy Steps!!
Whether you’re a snow bunny who thrives in the cold or a sad beach bum who’s daydreaming of hot summer days, your skin is here, in real-time, dealing with the harsh realities of winter. Just like you may need to winterize your car, garden, or house, you need to winterize your skin! What does that mean? Update your daily routine to prepare your skin for these chilly times.
#1. Add A Gentle Cleanser
One easy adjustment is to use a gentle, cream-based cleanser. I like to have one handy at all times! They’re great for removing makeup, sweat, any build-up, but especially great for dry skin. Just because something is gentle doesn’t mean it’s not effective. You can get a thorough cleaning without stripping your skin of the natural sebum it needs to thrive in the cold.

#2. Rethink Your Routine
In the colder months, some products may need to take a knee. For example, products that use perfumes and/or alcohol in them. Many toners, aftershaves, and astringents have these ingredients in their formulation.
If you cannot go without some sort of toner in your routine, try switching them out for facial mists with calming and nourishing ingredients. Remember to always lock in that hydration with a moisturizer right after applying the mist (or you could be doing more harm than good to your skin).

For a budget friendly option, try Rosewater as a substitute.
#3. Moisturize
The best time to add your moisturizer to your skin is right after washing it, while your skin is still damp. You’ll get maximum absorption from your products right into your skin! So, do yourself, your skin, and your bank account a favor and apply your skin care routine while your skin is still fresh and dewy from being cleansed.
Keep your favorite moisturizer by your side & a travel-size ready to go. Reapplying when needed could be the key to keeping your skin barrier healthy this winter season (especially if you’re outside a lot); do me a solid, and wash those hands before you reapply!!

#4. Add An Occlusive/Sealant Over your Moisturizer
If you feel a moisturizer is still not enough, apply a thin layer of an occlusive product over your moisturizer at night. Occlusive balms will create a physical barrier between the dry air and your products to lock in the moisture your skin craves.

For a budget friendly option, try Aquaphor as a sealant over your moisturizer
#5. Add A Chemical Exfoliator
If you struggle with flakey skin during the colder months, you may need to add a chemical exfoliator to your routine. However, a little goes a long way. Start out using it once every two weeks, then once every week, and eventually 2x a week, but no more than that! Your goal is to gently remove the dead skin cells for better product absorption and smoother complexion without leaving your skin barrier compromised and irritated from over-exfoliating.

#6. Apply Sunscreen
Don’t skip on sunscreen! I know that the days are shorter, and nights seem like they go on forever, but those pesky UV Rays are still in full effect and can even reflect off of snow! Your sunblock will help maintain your skin healthy and protect it from those harmful effects that the UV Rays can have on your skin.

#7. Dry Brushing / Body Brushing
Don’t forget about your body. If you haven’t already, add dry brushing into your daily routine! You’ll see amaziiing results, especially if you’re consistent with it. Use it before you shower and finish off by using a hydrating, non-fragrant body lotion.

#8. Add A Humidifier
The constant change of cold air outside but warm air inside has your skin going crazy!! The lack of humidity could leave your skin dry, dehydrated, feeling tight, itchy, and looking lackluster. Adding a humidifier to your home, especially your bedroom, could be the game-changer you need. A little moisture back into the air can do wonders for your skin; even improve your overall well-being.
Like our cars, our skin may need some additional maintenance in the colder months. Building a routine around the right products and habits will always payout in the end. Slow progress is still progress!! Remember that being consistent in your skin care routine is your best bet to attaining your skin goals. You got this!!
