High-Frequency: What Is It & What Is It Good For?

If you follow me on Instagram or my Facebook page you know I love High-Frequency machines, specifically to treat my acne. I’ve talked about HF in my stories and posts, and if you have ever had a treatment done by me, there’s a good chance I have used it on you. In conclusion: Big fan!!

So, what is High Frequency?
High-Frequency is also known as Nikola high-frequency current, named after its developer – Nikola Tesla during the 1800s. At first, Tesla’s scientific discovery was used to treat bacterial infections. The HF machines we use today are usually small handheld devices with multiple glass tools that contain Argan or Neon gases. The bubbles at the end of the tools are called electrodes. The electrodes produce the gas and release an electrical current that is germicidal, which helps kill the germs and bacterias that can cause acne in the first place.

What are some of the benefits of using High-Frequency devices?

  • Increase in collagen production

  • Germicidal (reduces acne-causing bacteria)

  • Enhances blood circulation

  • Boosts elastin production

  • Helps improve the appearance of fine lines

  • Improves the appearance of thinning hair

  • decreases the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes

Because HF machines are non-intrusive, you won’t need any downtime between treatments, and most people experience zero side effects while using or having a HF treatment done to them.

Okay, but…what are some contraindications?
If you have any of these conditions you should avoid the use of High-Frequency devices:

  • Pacemakers

  • Any history of heart disease

  • Epilepsy

  • Cancer

  • Pregnancy

  • Inflammatory disease

  • Nervous system disorders

  • High blood pressure

  • Hemophilia

Areas, where rosacea, spider veins, or broken capillaries are present, should be avoided, as the use of HF could worsen these conditions. While using HF make sure not to wear any jewelry at that time. Remember you are dealing with electrical currents; the chance of getting shocked and burned can never truly be discarded. Treatments should last between 5-10 minutes total, ideally done by a professional. Safety should be your first priority, always!

Overall, High-Frequency devices used in a Spa environment are incredibly safe and non-invasive. This technology has come very far since the 1800s, and it ain’t going anywhere – Thanks Nikola!!

Who’s excited to try High-Frequency? Have you tried it before? What are your thoughts and questions? Let me know below (:
